Pediatric Oncology Advanced Practice Provider(Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) Fellowship

Our vision is to enhance the transition of newly graduated APPs or experienced APPs new to Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and inspire their practice as they become proficient clinicians. The aim of the fellowship is to shape the APPs practice to deliver high quality, evidence based, ethical, compassionate, and cost-effective care to pediatric hematology/oncology patients, while promoting professional development and leadership.

Fellowship Overview

The fellowshipprovides comprehensive training with the goal of developing well-prepared Pediatric Hematology/Oncology APPs. APP Fellows are supported by a structured educational framework combining didactic and experiential learning to promote and advance their critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills enabling them to provide safe, efficient, patient-centered, specialized care to a diverse pediatric hematology/oncology patient population. Additionally, the APP fellowship program supports professional development and leadership through participation in research, organizational committees, conferences, and programs.

The first half of the program consists of three, equal length rotations in the Pediatric Inpatient, Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center (PACC), and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The second half of the program will allow the fellow to choose an area (or areas) of focus. The fellows will be guided by experienced preceptors, managers, and the fellowship director.

Fellow Clinical responsibilities will include:

  • Obtaining patient health histories
  • Performing comprehensive physical assessments
  • Ordering and analyzing laboratory and diagnostic studies
  • Formulating and implementing treatment plans
  • Coordinating patient care
  • Evaluating the patients response to treatment plans

Pediatric Outpatient: Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center (PACC)


The Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center is a comprehensive APP run clinic that serves patients in the ambulatory care setting. Fellows will have the opportunity to experience various patient visit types, including new patient visits, established care visits for routine management, and urgent care visits. Routine management of the pediatric hematology/oncology patient may include symptom management and/or treatment with high dose chemotherapy or immunotherapy. The fellow will provide direct clinical services for acute and chronic illness management in the areas of Pediatric Solid Tumors and Pediatric Hematologic Malignancies in collaboration with attending physicians.


Pediatric Inpatient: Memorial 9 (M9)
At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the APP driven model in Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies, Pediatric Surgery, and Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care (PACT) promotes autonomous management of patients in these areas of clinical practice. The fellow will provide direct clinical services for acute illness management in these areas in collaboration with attending physicians. The goal of this rotation is to provide comprehensive training in these areas to promote safe, patient-centered care to this specialized patient population.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
While rotating within the PICU, the APP fellow will provide direct clinical services for the evaluation and management of critically ill pediatric hematology/oncology patients in collaboration with pediatric intensivists and the multidisciplinary team. Our vision is to enhance and promote the transition of the new APP into practice while providing comprehensive education and training specific to pediatric critical care medicine.

12 months

2 per year, starting August 2021

Eligibility & Requirements

  • Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioners
  • Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioners
  • Family Nurse Practitioners
  • Physician Assistants
  • Current New York State RN and NP licenses, or PA license and appropriate NP/PA board certification
  • All applicants must be graduates of accredited United States University programs.
